Pollo Del Mar - Compilations/Tributes Guitar Ace - Link Wray Tribute MuSick Recordings Song: Jack the Ripper One of my all-time favorite
surf-instro bands, Pollo Del Mar, serves up justice to the Wrayman on "Jack
the Ripper." This is one of his greatest songs ever recorded.
Music Dish - Keith Hannaleck This is the best to date from San Francisco's ever larger Pollo Del Mar. Simply stunning. This is an absolutely raging performance of Link Wray and his Raymen's "Jack The Ripper." It doesn't get much bigger than this. Exquisite tortured feedback, glorious sustain, and precise power. Powerful drums, thundering bass, and intense guitars. Wears me out!!! ***** (5 Stars) Reverb Central - Phil Dirt Anything that acknowledges the feral majesty of Mr. Link Wray is A.O.K. in my book. This compilation does the job by offering some cool moments (Deke Dickerson, Dave Wronski, Boss Martians, Pollo Del Mar), but the mostly sedate covers on the rest of the album ultimately prove the man is still the man. Guitar Player - Michael Molenda I LOVE Pollo del Mar's "Jack the Ripper", which could actually be my favorite song done by them ever! Very tight and energetic, beautiful tones, and shards of feedback going through the verses as the PERFECT counterpoint. Great idea, guys! -Ivan Pongracic Chinese Checkers - A Tribute to Booker T. and the MGs ...Some of the hottest up-and-coming names on the guitar based surf-rock
scene are on hand here including Pollo Del Mar (with a spell-binding cover
of "Time Is Tight.") Opening with a marvelous decaying delayed guitar chord, this quickly drops
into a solid version with most unusual drums and a great quirky arrangement.
This is not one of my fave Booker T. and the MG's tracks, but this version has immense charm. Great stuff. **** (4 Stars) For A Few Guitars More - Ennio Morricone Tribute ...Other remarkable tracks include Pollo del
Mar's tongue-in-cheek "Navajo Joe," slyly sneaking a lick from the Shadows'
"Apache" into the mix. Pollo Del Mar
use distant feedback and sustain to create an eerie and sullen danger. The
tribal drums and emotionally smooth bass lay the groundwork under the two
guitars for a complete production. They close out with a couple of lines
from "Hiawatha" and "Apache." Magnificent! *****(5 Stars)
Surfin' Senorita - A Tribute to Herb Alpert There just ain't no getting around the spectacular sound of Pollo Del Mar.
Their twin guitar attack straddles dissonant discordant edge and pristine
shimmering joy. This is totally tubular, happy and free of borders. The second
half drops into a very cool hand clap rhythm and bass thing with much suavity.
Way cool. ****(4 Stars)
Gosh, there isn't a whole lot to say here, except "wow, Herb Alpert".
Herb Alpert, the man who gave the world of game shows cheesy and happy theme
music and unconsciously wrote soundtracks to countless surfing and beach-blanket-bimbo
flashback movies. The best of Alpert is represented here, along with the best of the
bands united in the cause to Bring Surf Music Back: Sir Finks, Satan's Pilgrims, Pollo del Mar...
